Working together to create positive change in our island’s food systems and communities
Program Description
The Gwaii Trust Society Board of Directors has created the Food Security Program to fund projects that focus on enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Haida Gwaii. Incorporating a youth or economic component will be given priority consideration.
While the program contemplates supporting local food security projects, It’s main focus is about making nutritious and culturally appropriate food accessible to all Islanders in a sustainable practical way. This program aims to promote social justice through more equitable access to food resources, while building and revitalizing local communities and economies. Supporting local, regional, and family-scale, sustainable local farmers and businesses; empowering diverse groups of people working together to create positive change in our island’s food systems and communities.
Project applications should strive to attain some or all of the following:
- Promote a just, sustainable, and diverse food system.
- Meet the food needs of all demographics, including people with low incomes
- Promote good nutrition and health
- Revitalize local communities and build self-reliance and collaboration
- Foster community economic development and strengthen existing local and regional food systems
- Promote good working conditions and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and food system workers
- Honour and celebrate diverse cultures and traditions
- Enhance the dignity and joy of growing, preparing, and eating food
- Build capacity for people to create change through education and empowerment.
