Program Description

The Gwaii Trust Society Board of Directors has established the Legacy Program for the purpose of providing Gwaii Trust funds to worthwhile community projects that otherwise would not be undertaken by groups, organizations, communities or societies. Community projects include, but are not limited to, workshops, training courses and seminars, youth and senior programming and small-scale feasibility studies. 

Micro-infrastructure projects are included in this program and defined as tangible capital projects, which improve the basic facilities, equipment, services and installations needed for growth and functioning of a group, community organization, or society

Guide to Applicants

The Gwaii Trust Board of Directors have allocated $175,000.00 to this program for the 2009/2010 fiscal year. Key tests for project support are merit and need, which must be demonstrated by project proponents to the Board according to following criteria:

This program supports applications that are smaller in nature but demonstrate a worthiness to the communities.

  • Available for this call $ 58,333.00 (three allocation call per year);
  • Project equity requirement 50%;
  • Key Tests : Merit & Need;
  • Core funding: Seed (start up) money only.  No continuing core funding (day to day operational expenses);
  • All projects must be limited to six (6) months;
  • Projects must demonstrate continued success without further Gwaii Trust funding;
  • No post secondary financial requests supported under this program
  • Administrative costs 10% maximum (but not if the persons administration of project is a paid element of that persons employment within the organization applying);
  • Facilitators cost maximum $500 per day;
  • Priority given to new applicants;
  • Letter of support (preferably 2 – from unrelated parties);
  • Cost quotes from all suppliers and other verifiable expenses;
  • Confirmation of all other income sources;
  • Meet at least one Constitutional Goal and objective of the Gwaii Trust;
  • Clear Project process description of all aspects of the project from start to finish – including final evaluation;
  • Funded as 20% upon approval (1st request), balance through invoice matching approved advance, last 20% is held until confirmation of project completion and final evaluation documentation received.
  • All projects approved with an equity component will be funded to the same degree as the equity approved.
  • All advances will be funded upon the receipt of invoice, based on the percentage of the project funding approved.
  •   On all projects where funding is outstanding over one year, site visits will be accompanied by shortened reapplication from the applicant that must be re approved by the Board in order to advance any further funding.
  • Projects outstanding for longer that one year will have site visits and accompanying reports forwarded to the board at least quarterly.
  • Maximum funding available per project will be 50% of the total project costs, up to a maximum of $20,000.00 and the maximum allocated amount to an organization or single department per fiscal year.
  • Applicants must provide 50% of the funding through fundraising, donations, cash or in-kind services for the project; and
  • Applicants must demonstrate the project will succeed without further Gwaii Trust funding.

The Gwaii Trust Legacy Program will provide seed money or encouragement for projects but not for on-going programs. In the case of coordinator or office start-up costs necessary for a project, the maximum funding will be restricted to six (6) months per project.

Priority will be given to new applicants.

The Gwaii Trust Board of Directors will not consider any information or supporting documentation received after the allocation deadline in their review of this project.

All applications submitted become the property of the the Gwaii Trust, who may publish the said applications on their website www.gwaiitrut.com or may otherwise utilize their content as the Gwaii Trust sees fit.

There are three (3) application periods per year for this program and the application dates are: October 30, 2009 February 26, 2010 May 28, 2010..
