Continuing Education Grant

Applicants are eligible for up to $3750 per year, or a maximum of five (5) courses to a maximum of $750 per course.  See details below for eligibility requirements.



The Continuing Education Grant was developed to encourage Haida Gwaii residents’ access to educational opportunities, both on and off Haida Gwaii, and is open to all residents of Haida Gwaii who have lived on Haida Gwaii for the past 24 consecutive months.


  • Applications will be accepted once registration is confirmed and up to two weeks into your semester for courses which are three months in duration or longer 
  • Short-term course applications will be accepted up to one day prior to the course start date.(Note: if your course has started you will not be eligible for the grant). Short courses: The Gwaii Trust considers courses that are less than three months in duration to be a “short” course.
  • Recent graduates or mature students can apply to this grant.
  • Students entering a trades program can apply to this grant.
  • Online courses from an accredited post secondary institution qualify under this program.
  • Courses from an accredited post secondary institution which result in credits toward a certificate, diploma or degree qualify under this program.
  • Travel assistance applications may also be considered for applicants travelling off island to attend school if they must pay those costs out of pocket (visit the Travel Assistance Grant page for more information).
  • Applicants must be a resident of Haida Gwaii and have lived on Haida Gwaii for the past 24 consecutive months. A student who has left Haida Gwaii to attend school but otherwise maintains their residency on Haida Gwaii is considered a resident for the purposes of this grant.
  • Workshops, professional fees, conferences, seminars, webinars, symposiums, forums, apprenticeships, one on one coaching and consultant fees are not eligible under this program.
  • Education at a non recognized post secondary institution is not an eligible use of this grant
  • Courses without tuition are not eligible under this program
  • Late applications will not be considered 


  • Applicants are eligible for up to $3750 per year, or a maximum of five (5) courses to a maximum of $750 per course. 
  • Funding is based on the actual receipted costs of course and course material.  Gwaii Trust will fund the lessor of $750 per course, or the actual receipted cost of the course and course materials.
  • Funding is awarded upon the successful completion of the course.
  • Applicants must supply paid receipts to be eligible for any funding.

Students Attending any Haida Gwaii Post Secondary Institution

  • A limited number of grants will also be available to “off island” students attending any Haida Gwaii post secondary institution. 10 grants will be available to a maximum of $1,500 per annum, per individual. These grants will be available to individuals that can demonstrate financial need.  Please contact your local Haida Gwaii post secondary institution for qualification guidelines.

Guide to Applicants:

  • All applications must be submitted online. Applicants unable to access the online application are encouraged to contact for assistance.
  • Applicant must provide proof of course registration, including a course outline and description.
  • Insert an essay (250 maximum word count), with a brief description of your course outline, career, and/or academic goals, and how the grant will assist you in reaching these goals.
  • Any additional information pertaining to the application should be included on a separate page.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all supporting documents are sent to the Gwaii Trust Society.
  • If you are a returning student, a new application must be filled out each calendar year fulfilling the above noted guidelines and providing supporting documents.

All Education Grant Disbursements:

  • The grant will be awarded to the students in one installment.  Payment will be awarded only after the student has submitted confirmation to Gwaii Trust that they have successfully completed their course(s) (verified by a copy of their official transcript, or similar acceptable document).  A student that has not passed a course may be eligible for funding if they are able to provide confirmation of attendance to 95% of classes.
  • Those taking online courses and/or short courses must demonstrate that all assignments have been completed, that the student has participated in class discussions, quizzes, midterm tests, and final exams, providing proof of submission.
  • Each recipient may be approved for up to five courses, per annum, up to the maximum of $3750 per year.

Final Reporting

  • Submit a copy of your most recent transcript or certificate demonstrating completion of the course(s)
  • Applicants must supply proof of payment to be eligible for any funding.
  • Provide a cover letter stating your request for payment, along with a short report on the outcomes of your course(s)
